This may interfere with a person’s time for self, family, and friends. A caterer must have excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills. He or she must also be a good cook, well-organised, determined, self-motivated, and have lots of patience. The caterer will also need excellent time, stress, and financial management skills, and must be very detail-oriented. Most of all, the caterer will need to be an excellent planner, as well as be a good problem-solver. Basically, the caterer will need to be able to plan for the best and be prepared for the worst that can happen at any type of event. This includes being prepared for ruined food, unexpected inclement weather, personality conflicts among clients and staff, and staff not showing up. The person must also be well-informed regarding catering insurance, health and safety regulations, legal matters, tax matters, and first aid. The rewards and advantages Although the disadvantages are numerous, there are just as many rewards and advantages. One advantage of being a caterer is that the person can opt to work for someone else or be self-employed. Another advantage is that the caterer can be in charge of his or her own career and its success. Catering also offers the advantage of having a wide variety of work environments, so it doesn’t get too boring very quickly. Yet another advantage of being a caterer is the friends and social contacts that the person makes during the development of his or her career. Caterers get to meet lots of people that they may otherwise never get the chance to meet. Catering also opens up many new avenues for experiencing social events that the person may otherwise not have access to. Due to the nature of the work, a caterer knows when his or her work is being appreciated by others. It’s also very rewarding to know that you are helping other people to enjoy the special events in their lives more. Another advantage is that there will always be a need for caterers. Humans will continue to need to eat and drink, and there will always be some who want someone else to do the cooking and serving. A caterer may also earn a high profit if the business is well-managed. A person can start out as small or as big as they choose, although it’s best to start out by working for someone else. A caterer can also choose whether to work part-time or full-time. There are many people willing to train others to become caterers. There are lots of jobs for those who choose to be caterers.
